Invisalign for Children

The most reliable way to tell if your child needs braces or Invisalign is to book an initial consultation with an orthodontist. At Circ Dental, we offer teeth straightening services for children aged 6 and up.

During an initial consultation, one of our dentists or orthodontists will examine your child’s teeth and tell you if they are out of line or not. However, there are a few signs which might suggest a problem. These include:

  • Teeth crowding together
  • Teeth out of line or in odd positions
  • Difficulty chewing or biting food
  • Pain when eating or speaking
  • Speech problems
  • A big difference between the two rows of teeth

At Circ Dental, we offer Invisalign First, tailor-made for kids between the ages of 6 and 10 (also known as Phase 1 treatment), as well as metal or ceramic braces. Invisalign First aligners are designed to fit baby teeth; after most or all of your child’s permanent teeth have come through, we usually recommend adult aligners or braces.

The Invisalign First Process

1

Consultation and planning

We will take a precise scan of your child’s teeth using an iTero 3D scanner, so we can find the best treatment that fits their profile. We will assess how the jaw is growing and where the adult teeth are developing.

It is important to note that Invisalign may not always be the right choice, especially where teeth are severely misaligned; in this case, ceramic or metal braces may be a better option.

If your child’s teeth have few or no issues, they can simply be monitored with regular check-ups. Our team may also recommend waiting until all their permanent teeth have fully erupted to begin teeth-straightening treatment.

2

Active treatment

Your child’s aligners will be fitted, with regular check-ups every 4 to 8 weeks. Our dental team will show you and your child how to place and look after the aligners, when to replace them and how to keep their teeth healthy. Although standard Invisalign treatment takes between 18 and 24 months, Invisalign First can vary.

Our dental team recommends that aligners are worn between 20 and 22 hours a day. If this may be a problem, let us know. We encourage you and your child to take an active part in the journey and will work with you to find a solution.

3

Reveal and retainer

At their final appointment, your child’s aligners will be replaced with a retainer. We’ll provide a clear, removable retainer, worn at night, to keep everything in place and keep up all the hard work. Our dental team will show your child how to clean it and keep their smile looking great.

Invisalign for Teenagers (12+)

Once most of their permanent teeth have come through, teenagers can usually be treated with standard Invisalign aligners. Jaw growth may still be occurring, and teeth are still often easier to move than in adulthood.

It is important that aligners are worn 20-22 hours a day; if you are worried your child may find it difficult to keep up with this, we may suggest fixed braces as an alternative.

Frequently Asked Questions

Treatment times vary, but as bone density is lower in teenagers than in later adulthood, younger patients might respond slightly more quickly than adults.
