When is a dental problem an emergency?

It can be difficult to decide when something is an emergency or not, and it’s normal to want to wait and see if things go away, rather than immediately see a dentist. However, we recommend seeking emergency care in the following cases: Unrelenting pain that painkillers are not easing Severe swelling affecting the cheeks or gums Severe bleeding Teeth broken or knocked out due to injury Orthodontic appliances breaking (for example, wires from braces coming loose)

You did an emergency root canal but said I need to come back?

Root canals can be lengthy, and it may not be possible to complete this in a short emergency slot as rushing the procedure can compromise the quality of the result. We will get you out of pain and treat what we can immediately, then schedule a second appointment.

I’ve knocked my tooth out – what should I do?

Firstly, try to stay calm and find the tooth. The NHS suggests holding the tooth by the crown (the white part that sticks out of the gum), and rinsing it in a saline solution, milk or saliva if dirty. Then, try to reinsert it into the socket, then bite down gently on a cloth to hold it in place. If it cannot go back in, we suggest storing it in milk or saliva. Spit into a container if it’s your tooth, or get your child to do so if it’s theirs. Then, call us as soon as possible. Note: Do not attempt to replace a baby tooth as it could damage the permanent tooth growing underneath it.

What emergency dental treatments do you provide in Wigan?

Depending on the treatment, we may offer you a local anaesthetic.

Can you permanently fix a chipped tooth in one emergency visit?

If it’s a small enamel or dentine level chip, yes. If the fracture is large and involves the nerve, this may require another appointment.

What should I do if I need an emergency dentist outside of your opening hours?

If you need urgent dental advice when we’re closed, call NHS 111. They can assess your symptoms and, if needed, arrange an emergency dental appointment through an out-of-hours service. For life-threatening emergencies, always call 999.

Emergency appointment

When you arrive, getting you comfortable and out of pain is our first priority. Our emergency dental care team in Wigan will listen to you in a non-judgemental way. We will review your medical history, then perform a thorough clinical examination of the affected area(s) and surrounding tissues. If necessary, we’ll take digital X-rays or 3D CBCT scans.

Diagnosis and treatment

We will explain your diagnosis and the treatment options in clear, understandable terms. Depending on the complexity of the treatment you need, we may not be able to provide a permanent treatment immediately, but will usually be able to provide a temporary fix with additional appointments later on if needed.

Aftercare

We will give you comprehensive guidance on how to take care of the affected area, and encourage you to book a follow up appointment. We may prescribe painkillers or antibiotics as appropriate. If necessary, we will also provide you with gauze and other items you may need to take care of the site.
