What to Expect at a Dental Hygienist Appointment

Review

Your hygienist will start by going over your medical and dental history. We’ll ask about any medication you take, and any concerns you might have about your oral and dental health. Then, we’ll check for any decay before we start your treatment.

Teeth Cleaning

We’ll use a special instrument to clean your teeth called a scaler to remove plaque and tartar that has built up. Airflow teeth cleaning is an ultrasonic cleaning method which will remove almost every trace of plaque and tartar throughout your mouth.

Tooth Polishing

We’ll polish your teeth with a special dental paste. This teeth cleaning and polishing process can remove any remaining stains and leave your teeth shiny and smooth

Aftercare

We’ll give you professional advice on how to keep up the good work and continue caring for your teeth and gums. We will also highlight any areas, for example, your back teeth, that you should pay attention to during your oral hygiene routine.

Periodontal Gum Treatment in Wigan

Periodontal gum treatment is a way of treating and managing gum disease without the need to resort to surgical procedures. Our scaling and root planing technique is usually used for treating mild to moderate gum disease (gingivitis and mild to moderate periodontitis).

Scaling involves the removal of plaque and tartar using both electronic and manual instruments. As well as manual scaling, we also use ultrasonic scalers which involve deep vibrations and a water spray. Root planing involves smoothing the rough edges of your tooth roots so that the gum tissue can reattach to them, and that bacteria find it more difficult to reaccumulate.

We may also use antibiotics, either taken orally or with on-the-spot gels or microspheres.
