Signs you need a root canal

Root canal treatment is needed when the dental pulp, the tissue inside your tooth that contains the nerves and blood vessels, becomes infected. This can happen as a result of severe decay, a crack in the tooth, or trauma to the mouth. Signs that you may need root canal treatment include:

Persistent or severe toothache

Tooth pain when biting down

Lingering sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures

A tooth turning grey or dark

Swollen or tender gums

A gum abscess

Some dental infections are completely symptomless in their early stages. Routine check-ups allow your dentist to identify signs of infection before they become more serious.

If you’re concerned about any of these symptoms, get in touch with our team so we can assess the tooth and discuss your treatment options.

Root canal treatment at Circ Dental: Before and after

Root canal treatment process

1

Examination and diagnosis

Your dentist will carry out a thorough examination and take an X-ray of the affected tooth to assess the size and extent of the infection. This allows us to plan the most appropriate treatment for your tooth. We’ll involve you fully in the process and be transparent about what to expect.

2

Local anaesthetic and comfort control

Before the procedure begins, we’ll administer a local anaesthetic to keep you comfortable throughout treatment. We’ll explain each stage as we go, so you always know what to expect.

3

Cleaning the infected root canal

Once the area is numb, a small opening is made in the tooth. Using precise instruments under our dental microscope, your dentist carefully removes the infected pulp. The canal is then thoroughly cleansed, flushed, and disinfected to remove harmful bacteria.

4

Filling and sealing the tooth

Once the canal is clean, it’s filled using a biocompatible rubber-type material called gutta-percha and sealed to help protect against future reinfection.

5

Final restoration

To complete your root canal treatment, the small opening is sealed. In most cases, the access point is restored with a composite filling. For back teeth, we may then recommend a crown for extra strength and to protect the tooth from fracture. Your dentist will talk you through the most suitable option for your tooth.

Frequently asked questions

Root canal treatment is carried out under local anaesthetic, which means you shouldn’t feel pain during the procedure itself. Some mild soreness in the days following treatment is normal and usually settles quickly.
